Matthew's guide dogs are an important part of his life. His memoir, Guiding My Human, is written from the perspective of his first guide dog, Gilly. His second and current guide dog, Achilles, provides the point of view for the blog found here.

Matt met his wife Rita while he was living in Rio de Janeiro teaching English. In addition to leading him to his life partner, his experiences in Brazil have been a great source of inspiration for his writing, music, and way of life. His memoir discusses some of these experiences as well as some of the fascinating cultural differences that he encountered there. His music draws upon bossa nova and MPB, two musical styles characteristic of the country.

Matthew's music offers inspiration and emotional healing for himself and others. He sings and plays guitar as he performs original compositions rooted in the traditions of Western popular music.
